  • This is the first comparative attempt ever recorded in the literature to study in situ the pancreatic juice lactase level concurrently in cow (n=10) and buffalo calves (n=12). The samples were collected by cannulating the pancreatic duct 30 minutes both before (BF) and after (AF) feeding during orning as well as evening hours from birth till attainment of early ruminant age (15 wk). Significant post-prandial responses were recorded on specific days in both bovine calves. Irrespective of feeding stage, post-prandial levels compared to basal levels increased in both the species of calves, but the increase was less in cow calves (9.67 percent) as compared to buffalo claves (92.93 percent). Average lactase levels (micro g/mg protein) in cow calves were 3.14+-0.15 during colostrum feeding, 2.89+-0.10 during MRP feeding, 180+-0.04 with concentrate and hay feeding and 1.64+-0.04 with fodder feeding. The respective values in buffalo calves were 1.02+-0.56, 3.35+-0.36, 1.46+-0.12 and 1.28+-0.09.
