Comparison of breeding values for milk yield under various recording plans

Complete lactations of 627 buffaloes sired by 39 bulls were used to estimate the breeding values for actual and predicted milk yield under different recording plans. The recording plans were:i) the standard plan (milk yield recorded both for morning and evening milkings), ii) A plan (milk yied recorded for morning milking only), iii) PM plan (milk yield recorded for evening milking only), iv) aternate AM-PM plan (milk yield recorded for morning or evening milking alternatively) and v) alternate PM-AM plan (milk yield recorded for evening or morning milking, alternatively). For all the five plans, milk yield was recorded at a monthly (4 week) interval. Ranking of animals on partial lactation information under different test plans was not the same. Rank correlations between breeding values of bulls for actual and predicted yields ranged from 0.35 to 0.99 for bulls and 0.54 to 0.99 for buffalo cows. The AM plan and alternate AM-PM plan had comparable ranking while the other two plans were poorer as compared with the standard plan. Differences for ranking bulls as well as buffalo cows by different plans were not appreciable for later lactation stages. The rank correlations for actual and predicted milk yields reached almost unity at the 10th recording, in all five plans. Any of the five plans could be used for selection animals on their breeding values for milk yield if animals were recorded monthly.
