  • Case of chronic massive abdominal absces was recorded in a Nili-Ravi buffalo. Demeanor, feed intake, and milk production of the animal were unaltered. Hemogram revealed leucocytosis and an accelerated erythrocytic sedimentation rate. Streptococcus pyogenes was isolated from the pus. The isolate was resistant to streptomycin, novobiocin and erythromycin but sensitive to seven other antibiotics included in antibiogram. Despite a drainage provided and parenteral antibiotic administered for a week, a minimal reductio in the size of the swelling was observed till the end of week 3 post drainage. This report describes the isolation of Streptococcus pyogenes for the first time from the buffalo. It is speculated that the organism was transmitted to the affected buffalo from the owner or some other member of his family.
