  • Swamp bufalo ovaries were collected and fixed for histological examination of follicular atresia. Of the 312 follicles examined, 256 (82.1 percent were observed to be atretic. Of these, 71.4 percent and 94.4 percent follicles from follicular and luteal phase donor were atretic, respectively. The non-atretic follicles had at least seven layers of granulosa cells with a distinct basal membrane. The theca interna was thinner than the granulosa layer. Intermediately atresia follicles had a reduced granulosa layer and few pyknotic cells. The theca layer was hypertrophied. In strongly atresia follicles, the granulosa layer was sparse or absent with few squamous cells and prevalent internuclear spacing. Luteinized atresia follicles had a reduced granulosa layer and hypertrophied theca layer. In obliterative atresia, the granulosa layer was hypertrophied and extended inward towards the antrum. In cystic atresia, the granulosa layer was reduced and the theca layer was hyalinized or fibrosed. The results presented here provide basic information for studying follicular atresia in swamp buffalo. Moreover, the follicular diameter and stage of the estrous cycle were both a convenient an appropriate basis for use in the classification and description of the course of atresia.
