  • For the utilisation of uncared for male buffalo calves for meat production, growth and carcass studies were conducted on feeding at four planes of nutrition. Four rations were formulated to supply two levels of digestible crude protein (DCP) and two levels total digestible nutrients (TDN) recommended by NRC for 500g and 700g daily gain in beef cattle. The four rations were: (1) low protein-low energy, (2) low protein-high energy, (3) high protein-low energy and (4) high protein-high energy. Twenty male buffalo calves about one year of age were protected against diseases and conditioned on standard feeding for three months. At the start of experiment the average body weights were 115.2+-5.3, 137.2+-10.5, 126.4+-5.7 and 130.0+-5.4 kg in groups 1 to 4, respectively. Total period of feeding for attaining about 300 kg liveweight was 418, 313.6, 350.0 and 301.0 days in the corresponding groups. Growth response was significantly higher in high energy groups. Mean intake of DCP/kg gain in liveweight and carcass weight was significantly different among the groups. TDN/ME intake per kg gain was not significantly different among the groupshowever, it was lower in high energy groups when calculated for the carcass yield. Mean carcass characteristics and ofal yield were not significantly afected by the levels of protein ad energy in the diets.
